The Importance of Having a Fire Safety Plan for Your Business

As a business owner, you have a legal and ethical responsibility to keep your employees and customers safe. Part of Fire safety precaution and comprehensive safety plan for a business is well-thought-out fire prevention and response measures.

Many business owners don’t understand fire safety laws and procedures. Here are some key things to keep in mind when developing a fire safety plan for your business.

Have Fire Exits Clearly Marked

If a fire breaks out in your business, one of the most important things to do is to vacate the building. OSHA requirements say that every building should have at least two fire exits clearly marked and not close to one another.

These exits can be doors, windows, or any other large space for a person to pass through. Mark all fire exits with lighted signs. Nothing like furniture or boxes should ever be blocking these fire exits.

Fire Extinguishers Should Be Accessible and Visible

According to OSHA regulations, there should be fire extinguishers present that can address any kind of fire hazard. For example, if your restaurant kitchen has a grease fire, you should have an extinguisher to deal with that type of fire.

Fire extinguishers must be kept in good working order and inspected according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Make sure to document inspections with dates.

To inspect a fire extinguisher in Kenilworth, call ABC Fire & Safety. We perform the most careful fire extinguisher inspection NJ has to offer because our reputation depends on our excellent work.

Plan for Evacuation

As a business owner, you should provide an evacuation plan for your employees to ensure everyone knows the emergency evacuation routes. Post this plan somewhere highly visible and review it with your employees periodically.

You can’t assume that common sense will prevail in a fire emergency. Properly train your employees in your fire evacuation procedures semi-annually or annually. Your employees will feel more prepared for an actual fire event by following this training protocol.

Provide Fire Sprinkler Systems

You are supposed to equip your New Jersey business with a fire sprinkler system under OSHA regulations. When they detect a fire, these systems are automatic and will spray water and sound an alarm. Fire safety precaution system helps suppress the fire, alert those in the building, and call proper authorities.

Just as you should have your fire extinguisher in New Jersey inspected on a regular basis, you should also have your sprinkler system checked. Proper inspection and maintenance ensure that these systems will work properly in the event of a fire.

Depending on the fire suppression systems you have in place, your fire extinguishers may require inspection:

  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Quarterly (every three months)
  • Semi-annually (every six months)
  • Annually
  • Ever two to five years

Fire safety is vital for New Jersey business owners. Establishing an inspection schedule can help your employees know that you are committed to their safety. In addition, regular maintenance helps protect the business you’re working hard to build.
